MCDB 131 Medium was originally developed by Knedler and Ham as reduced serum-supplement medium for the culture of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC), and supports culture of other mammalian cell types, including human omental microvascular cells, hepatocytes, myocytes, and smooth muscle cells, as well as differentiation of hPSCs into functional pancreatic beta cells.

MCDB 131, with phenol red and added sodium pyruvate, no L-glutamine, no HEPES by Captivate Bio is formulated for superior quality, reliability, and consistency for use in mammalian cell cultures. MCDB 131 medium was originally developed by Knedler and Ham as a reduced serum-supplement cell culture medium for the culture of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC). MCDB 131 cell growth medium is also used with other cell types, including human omental microvascular cells, hepatocytes, myocytes, and smooth muscle cells. 

Recent studies have shown MCDB 131 cell media to be effective in definitive endoderm differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), allowing for the derivation of cell lines that produce epithelial lining of systems such as the intestines, lungs, liver, and pancreas. In addition, MCDB 131 culture media has proven to be a critical component in the differentiation of hPSCs into functional pancreatic beta cells through several culture stages producing definitive endoderm, primitive gut tube, pancreatic progenitors, endocrine progenitors, and insulin-producing cells. 

Captivate Bio’s MCDB 131 Medium contains no proteins or growth factors and is often supplemented with L-glutamine and FBS.
