Mycoplasma contamination is one of the most challenging problems of daily cell culture since commonly used antibiotics in cell culture are not effective against mycoplasma contamination. Mycoplasma can damage precious cell lines by inducing chromosomal aberrations, changes in cell morphology, and cell growth. For this reason, we offer abm’s PCR-based assay for mycoplasma contamination detection (PCR Mycoplasma Detection Kit – SKU# ABM-G238) and abm’s Mycoplasma Elimination Cocktail.
The Mycoplasma Elimination Cocktail by abm is more potent than similar products on the market, eliminating over 50 different species of mycoplasma contamination with only 4 treatments. In addition, no toxicity was shown in any cell line undergoing mycoplasma elimination treatment using the Mycoplasma Elimination Cocktail.
Features:
- Direct addition of cocktail to cell culture medium
- No change to routine cell culture methods needed
- Effectively eliminates over 50 types of mycoplasma species
- Broad range
- Not cytotoxic to most mammalian cell lines
Supplied by Applied Biological Materials (abm). Usually ships in 3 business days.
FAQs
What is the basis of the positive control in the mycoplasma kit?
It is DNA fragments containing proprietary sequences diluted in medium.
Can tissue culture supernatant be frozen and thawed for the test?
Yes.
I noticed the product arrived with precipitation. Is that normal?
That is normal as the contents are concentrated. You may warm the product in a 37 degrees Celsius water bath until the sample has completely dissolved.
Can you send the protocol for this kit, please? I am interested in purchasing this product, but I am not sure how much cells I can purify with this kit. I just detected mycoplasma with your mycoplasma detection kit. Thank you for your help.
Here is the link of protocol. http://www.abmgood.com/Mycoplasma-Elimination-Cocktail-G398.html
I notice a white precipitate after the delivery of the product; is this normal?
Yes, it is normal to observe a white precipitate in each vial. Please re-suspend the vial to mix the components. The solution is particulate in nature so it is not homologous nor will the particles dissolve. There should be divided solids throughout the tube after mixing. If vortexing doesn’t help, you can try pipetting the mixture inside the hood if the pellet is hard to break.
Which mycoplasma strains are targeted?
Potential strains which may be affected are: Mycoplasma pneumonia strains Mycoplasma hyosynoviae strains Mycoplasma hyorhinis strains Mycoplasma synoviae strains Note: Some strains may naturally become tolerant to this cocktail due to their endogenous defense mechanisms, and thus may show reduced sensitivity. In such cases, other antibiotic combinations may need to be considered.
What size dish or flasks do you recommend the cells should be cultured in?
We encourage customers to culture their cells in either a 6-well plate or 10 cm plate.
I have used the Mycoplasma Elimination Cocktail on my cells but my cells are dying. Why is this happening?
The mycoplasma cocktail is a very potent combination of different antibiotics to increase the success of eliminating mycoplasma. Even though we have tested and confirmed no cytotoxicity was observed for a variety of cell lines, we would still recommend optimizing the best dilution for your specific cell line in order to achieve best results.
