RPMI 1640 Medium with phenol red and added sodium bicarbonate, no L-glutamine, no glucose, no HEPES by Captivate Bio is formulated for superior quality, reliability, and consistency for use in mammalian cell culture. Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 Medium was originally developed for the long-term culture of blood cells and the culture of normal and abnormal human leukocytes (e.g. neoplastic WBCs), and is now used as a general medium (with serum) for hybridoma cultures. RPMI 1640 medium has also been found suitable for a range of mammalian cell lines in suspension cell culture and monolayer cell culture, including HeLa, Jurkat, MCF-7, PC-12, PBMC, astrocytes, and carcinomas.
This RPMI 1640 medium is modified as follows:
[+] Phenol Red
[+] Sodium Bicarbonate
[-] L-Glutamine
[-] Glucose
[-] HEPES
Using RPMI 1640
RPMI 1640 Medium is a unique classical cell culture media formulation as it contains a reducing agent called glutathione and high concentrations of vitamins. RPMI 1640 Medium contains biotin, vitamin B12, and PABA, which are not found in Eagle’s Minimum Essential Medium (EMEM) or Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM). This medium contains no proteins, lipids, or growth factors, and therefore requires supplementation with serum like FBS or platelet lysate.
